Bangladesh ended Sri Lanka’s dreams of reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup with a hard-fought three-wicket victory in a match filled with controversy on Monday. The win meant Bangladesh grabbed seventh place in the standings, while Sri Lanka slipped to eighth. Although both sides fail to reach the knockout stage of this competition, the battle for a place in the Champions Trophy 2025 continues. The top 7 teams along with hosts Pakistan will qualify directly for the competition and as a result both sides remain in contention along with the Netherlands (4 points) and England (2 points).
Despite the AQI hovering close to the 400 mark, it was business as usual after the two teams braved toxic conditions as Bangladesh bowled out Sri Lanka for 279 in 49.3 overs, with Charith Asalanka score a 105-ball 108.
But Bangladesh chased the target with 53 balls to spare.
From 210 for 2, Bangladesh slumped to 269 for 7 before romping home in 41.1 overs with Tanzim Hasan Sakib (9) score the winning runs.
The win snapped Bangladesh’s six-match losing streak and kept them in the race for Champions Trophy qualification while spoiling Sri Lanka’s chances for the 2025 event in Pakistan.
The top seven teams from this World Cup will qualify for the Champions Trophy, while Pakistan, as the hosts, have qualified automatically.
For Sri Lanka, it was their sixth defeat in eight matches. Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, who have four points each, need to finish inside the top-8 to make the cut.
