While restaurants around the world are experimenting with innovative themes to attract customers, one eatery in Japan has adopted a bizarre practice to grab people’s attention. At an eatery called Shachihoko-ya in Nagoya, people are willingly slapped in the face before being served their meals. For just 300 Japanese yen (Rs 170), kimono-clad waitresses slap a willing customer in the face with their palms over and over again. There is also a 500 yen (Rs 283) surcharge if patrons request a particular staff member to give them a beating. The service is popular with both Japanese men and women, as well as foreign tourists.

Bangkok Lad took to the X and shared a video of the famous restaurant, writing: ”This is Shachihokoya – a restaurant in Nagoya – where you can buy a menu item called ‘Nagoya Lady’s Slap’ for 300 yen.” thousands of views with funny reactions and comments from internet users.

”The harder the female staff hit them, the more excited the guests became. Not only were patrons not angry, but they seemed to feel more relaxed after being hit. They would even thank the employee who hit them,” said the YouTube video narration on the ‘Save Your Money In Japan’ channel.

The controversial service, which started in 2012, revived the establishment’s business and attracted a growing number of patrons willing to try the experience. At first, it was only one female employee who struck. As demand grew, management hired more girls willing to dish out some slaps.

However, the establishment has now suspended its face mask service after some videos of the bizarre service went viral. In a post on X, the restaurant urged people not to come by and expect to be slapped.

The post read: ”Shachihoko-ya does not currently offer slapping. We appreciate the attention it has received today, but we cannot accommodate visitors with the intention of receiving slaps. We didn’t expect old videos to go viral like this, so please understand before you come.”

It is not clear if the service is coming back soon or if they have stopped it completely.
